To compliment the hard work that our students maintain and strive towards, we aim to contribute strongly towards the other aspects of personal development. We achieve this through extra-curricular activities for students aged 3 to Secondary.
YCIS Youth Saturday Soccer
The third season of this highly popular event ran during September and October 2010. Initially it was launched by YCIS teacher Chris Warren (now at YCIS Beijing). Due to popular demand his legacy has continued! For five Saturday mornings the 64 participants arrived on campus; there were two Divisions, namely Squirts Division aged 3 – 5 and Atom Division aged 6 – 8. The players were divided into teams of 8 boys and girls and kitted out in national team strips (Germany, France, Spain, Argentina etc). Thanks to the enthusiastic help of volunteer parents serving as coaches and referees, each morning ran with practice sessions to hone football skills and good teamwork, culminating in the much-awaited matches. The last session of the season concluded with an award ceremony with trophies, framed team photos and a soccer gift. This season’s Coach Coordinator, Trevor Weston, maintained a running tally of goals scored in all Atom Division matches; excitement rose as the top scorers were announced. This event is open widely through the community and attracts also non-YCIS children. With the installation of a Bakery’s Coffee Shop and plenty of seating for parents it soon turns into a social gathering for all ages.
YCIS Qingdao International School Sailing Regatta
In May 2010 YCIS hosted the first International Schools Sailing Regatta in cooperation with the National Organisation for Community Sailing Projects. Our students have enjoyed sailing programmes since 2007 and we were keen to extend this fantastic opportunity more widely. We are a partner of the network of Qingdao schools and thus opened the chance to other students to join. Classes were set on weekends for beginners and intermediate sailors; they learned the basics of rigging a boat, the theory of sailing, capsizing and racing tips and etiquette. The programme concluded with a regatta; students entered the boat class races and also joined for team races. Participants were witness to the oath given by Wayne Low of YCIS, calling for all to show good sportsmanship and courage. For some students it was a chance to brave the waves, eliminate any fears and to master a new sport. Certificates and engraved trophies now adorn the shelves of these courageous young people.
