It’s What’s Inside – that counts
The schools our children need today should reflect the progress the world has seen during previous years. The education our children should receive will be different as well; to equal the expectations of the world’s future. The friends we meet do not necessarily hail from the same town. Even the food types we eat are often produced in other continents, manufactured in a foreign country, made available in our local supermarket. With globalisation as a norm, a one-state or one-nation education system no longer suffices to prepare our children for the future challenges.
YCIS has pioneered a new paradigm in international education. We define an international education by what goes on inside the student. It is about the internal transformation of the child. This is affected by the international school’s culture, which is created by the teaching and learning environment, the administration, the overall content and the process which links to the character formation of the child.
The international education ethos that Yew Chung reflects can be seen in the content and process of education that leads our students to an inner transformation whereby they are both Eastern and Western adaptable.
Here follow a few reflections of current parents about their journey with YCIS.
“My sons started with Yew Chung International School of Qingdao at the age of 4 & 6 and with great pleasure, I would like to say that they are growing into more responsible and organized children. The school provides my children a different world. The programme very strongly reflects the vision and strength of YCIS. The school is large enough to offer a wide curriculum, yet small enough to retain a friendly community atmosphere with lots of teacher time and attention available to each individual child. The best compliments come from my children - they come home happy and look forward to going back the next day. These may be simple and honest words but say a great deal about the efforts the school team puts in.” Mrs. Anita Tiwari, mother of two YCIS children for four years.
Mrs. Kim, mother of a Year 7 and Year 9 children, says, “I have a good understanding of YCIS curriculum which is conveyed in Yew Chung International School Qingdao because my son studied at YCIS Shanghai before moving here. The
teaching method at YCIS has proved its strengths over the long school history; this gives me confidence with it. Both my children have shown some transformations while studying at YCIS. One of these is that they
understand and respect different cultures and thoughts of other nationality students while spending time with their classmates from France, Germany, Singapore, America, England, and many more. Yew Chung International School Qingdao has a ‘homey’ atmosphere. Not only students themselves but also students and teachers are close enough to comfortably talks with each other. Students are involved with character development activities so are not bystanders, but active ‘doers’. As a result, my children have become proactive, which is another transformation. I also appreciate that my children now search materials and initiate studying on their own accord, instead of being forced to learn or trying to memorize everything in textbooks.”
Mrs. Manuel is mother to two Secondary students who have been with YCIS Beijing for eight years before joining Yew Chung International School Qingdao two years ago. She explains, “Yew Chung International School Qingdao goes by the vision, to mould lifelong learners. I can honestly say, and without boasting, that my children are turning out to be just that. Their love for books was cultivated in the early years and has developed within them the desire to read voraciously. YCIS invested in the learning of both major world languages in the classroom as evident in the class being under the care of both a Western Teacher and a Chinese Teacher. Learning Chinese in the
early part of their education was accessible throughout the day. It was not just an hour lesson on language but deeper through the co-teaching philosophy.”
In order to be competitive, our children need a global education that instils in them an inquisitive mind, an ability to communicate and work with people from different cultures that speak different languages and have strong moral values, thus preparing them to face unforeseen obstacles in the future. Therefore both parents and educators now look beyond the bricks and walls of classrooms and facilities, to find the right
institution that can provide a global education for our children to excel in the future. A happy child is a learning child.
It’s more than an education. It’s what’s inside - that counts.
